The boy’s father wanted to teach him a lesson, so he gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper he must hammer a nail into their wooden fence. On the first day of this lesson, the little boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. He was really mad! Over the course of the next few weeks, the little boy began to control his temper, so the number of nails that were hammered into the fence dramatically decreased. It wasn’t long before the little boy discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence. Then, the day finally came when the little boy didn’t lose his temper even once, and he became so proud of himself, he couldn’t wait to tell his father. Pleased, his father suggested that he now pull out one nail for each day that he could hold his temper. Several weeks went by and the day finally came when the young boy was able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. Very gently, the father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. “You have done very well, my son,” he smiled, “but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same.” The little boy listened carefully as his father continued to speak. “When you say things in anger, they leave permanent scars just like these. Mostly because I’ve been continuously asked about it by teachers, my parents, family friends… basically any adult in general. And it’s really starting to annoy me because people seem to think that you’re not going to have a good future if you don’t pass certain exams or if you don’t go to University or something like that, when, technically, that’s not true. Sure, good grades help, but they don’t shape a great life. You don’t need A’s to be happy, despite the overwhelming concept that seems to have attached itself to every teenager around the world. It’s perfectly okay to not know what the hell you’re doing and it’s more than okay to admit it. I like being able to say, “I don’t know yet but I’m excited to find out”. You are more than capable of bending and snapping other people’s expectations. If you want something enough, you’re going to get it. Maybe not today, or tomorrow, or even in a year. But you will. And the great thing is, it’s completely up to you. So, if you’re like me, a teenager who isn’t going to leave college with flying colours, that’s okay. I just want to be young and have fun and learn and grow, and figure all the serious stuff out later. Don’t focus so much on money or superficial success, because although it might be able to buy you a huge house and flashy cars and weekend mini breaks, I’m not going to care about all that if I’m not completely happy. I need my soul and my spirit to be happy for everything else to fall into place.
